Once upon a time... How true in this matter as there was a time when Urbana had the some of the best water in the world. People came from other towns with jugs in tow to fill at the artesian pipes on Wood Street at the end of Lincoln Place. Water that came from beneath the High School hill, just another part of the aquafier under this area as part of glacial deposits that helped form the Mad River and the many streams in this area. This underground water is flowing at a 'light speed' rate, so some fools decided that they could dilute some of their nasty chemicals by dumping them on and into the ground over the years knowing, but not caring, where they would flow to. Grimes, Bulldog, Urbana Tool & Die, United Board & Carton, Howard Bond, Drackett are just a few over the years that may have contributed to the pollution problem that now plagues us. Who knows how many others may have come here to dump... Damage done. Where do we go from here... The flow of water is to the southwest from the city as where they have discovered six different plumes (for now) of VOC's (voilatile organic compounds) flowing freely near the Old Troy Pike wellfield. The same well that sits southwest of the waste water treatment plant as those in past administrations had no foresight. So the water here is now contaminated as they look for a place to put a new well. The EPA is investigating only the plumes that Siemens and Honeywell are going to have to pay dearly for. I am sure that there are other plumes along the railroad tracks just west of where Drackett was. I've been watching these things for many years now from when Howard Bond dumped slymacides one afternoon into The Mad River via Dugan Run that killed everything between Urbana and Enon in the river and where they were dumping raw sewage in to Bogles Run for over 25 years.... I will be adding more links to groundwater sites in the near future as we just had our first education committee meeting. The past has come and gone. We must now protect for what I believe may be the last source of pure water on this planet as the Mad River is one of, if not the last cold water habitat in the universe and The River Teays valley possibly the only source for clean drinking water that we have left....
